A group of experienced teachers sought to launch a new business start-up in the language training space within the education sector. For this client, pi STRATEGY helped develop the new venture strategy. This engagement involved an extensive competitor analysis, a series of focus group discussions with potential customers, an international leading practices study, and an assessment of core competencies that would be required. The language training market segment is a fiercely competitive market. The business model that pi STRATEGY crafted for this client not only focused on achieving economic value but also a strong element of social value. The resulting strategy encompassed a series of differentiating value propositions around quality of service rather than competing on price. This new venture has now been operating for a couple of years and growing rapidly and further expanding its portfolio of services. An important lesson derived from this engagement is that it is possible (and often necessary) to break away from established rules of the game in a highly competitive market segment and introduce ‘game changing’ value propositions to be successful in the long run.
